WHY Red, White & Blue? Color Story #3

(This is part 3 of a 3 part series on COLOR. Click on these links if you'd like to read part 1 on Pantone or part 2 on the power (or not) of pink.)

If you were born in America, you probably have a "strong" relationship (whatever "strong" means to you) to RED, WHITE & BLUE~VISUALLY seeing these 3 colors together, AUDIBLY hearing someone SAY these 3 colors at the same time (and heck, even READING the 3 colors together in one sentence, right??).

So why RED, WHITE & BLUE on our flag?

If you look at flags from other countries, you also see lots of red, white and blue. (https://www.newhistorian.com/2016/10/18/many-flags-red-white-blue-part-two/7412/). Countries such as Slovenia, Croatia, France, even Chile and Thailand use these 3 colors. Some historians suggest that the American flag color choices ultimately come from the British flag…“reflecting the heritage of many of the Founding Fathers” despite the fact that independence was declared from Britain. Whoever started the red, white and blue theme for flags across the globe--“...what is perhaps most striking however, is the multitude of meanings the three colours have come to hold, as history has seen red, white and blue weaved into countless different narratives of cultural identity and association." https://www.newhistorian.com/2016/10/18/many-flags-red-white-blue-part-two/7412/

So what is it about these particular colors?

British flag

Officially, the colors in the flag do not have a specific meaning. However, when the SEAL of the United States of America was created in 1776, the colors were officially distinguished to be red, white and blue. The meanings were presented to congress by Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, and explained that…”white signifies purity and innocence; Red, hardiness & valour; and Blue… signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.” (http://swampland.time.com/2013/07/04/why-the-u-s-flag-is-red-white-and-blue/)

In looking at what colors signify or trigger for people, we can all probably agree even in modern times that RED signifies passion, energy, vigor & courage while BLUE tends to make us think of the sky and sea, stability, loyalty, truth & calm and WHITE symbolizes purity, innocence and goodness. If we regard a flag as a symbol of what a country stands for, who wouldn’t want these colors representing them???
